I Did Everything Wrong From The Gurus and Experts Standpoint...

Hi Fellow MC Members and Guests,

Tommie Kirkland (Captkirk) here...

When I first got started online, I did everything wrong from the Gurus and Experts standpoint. After 16 years online I'm probably still doing things wrong from the Gurus and experts standpoint.

What did they say that I'm doing wrong?:

  • Using a username instead of a Real Name. In the past, I only used captkirk.
  • Using an Avatar instead of a real picture of yourself  , I'm still using the first Avatar that I ever used.
  • Don't use Traffic Exchanges, FFAs, and Other FREE methods they say don't work. I'm still using them.
  • Don't use ALL CAPS in your subject title, I use ALL CAPS than and still using them 16 years later.
  • They said that people would NEVER follow me. I have signed up thousands and won numerous referral contests.

The point of my story, don't let others beliefs hold you back from exploring the opportunities on the Internet. BTW, The Gurus and Experts were wrong in my case. I guess I'm an exception to the rule. :)

I guess that's "thinking outside of the box" ;)

Yep, I'm glad the bees didn't listen to them either:

Wow! Let me add more to the list of things that I don't do:

- I don't like squeeze pages

- I don't like capture pages

I prefer to promote the sales pages of sites that I like. If I don't like the sales page I don't promote the sites.

I guess I do the opposite of what everyone say that we should do. Less competition for me. :)

While everyone saying that it can't be done, I'm doing it anyway...

I can see why you'd promote the sales page versus a squeeze page... it would certainly weed out the "tire kickers".  However, I have discovered that both have advantages.  The advantage for the landing page is that very few will order from the sales page the first time out (I know that I never do) and having the interested person on your mailing list reminds them of the offer that peaked their attention to begin with.  The bad thing that I've seen about squeeze pages is a lack of information... why is it that I should join your mailing list?  I like landing pages that give some information and if I'm interested in learning more then I can sign up and move on and think about the offer a bit before deciding and the person presenting the offer still gets the credit.  Plus, by have a list, you can offer other stuff too.

I promote programs that people can join for free with the option to upgrade if they need more features and benefits...

I prefer to promote programs that's useful for those joining that they can use as free members and earn money at the same time.

I don't even have picture in my LinkedIn profile. That's even worst than having an avatar according to the experts, gurus and others...

Here's what LinkedIn sent me in 2012:

"Tommie, congratulations!

You have one of the
top 5% most viewed LinkedIn profiles for 2012.

LinkedIn now has 200 million members. Thanks for playing a unique part in our community!"

There is something to what Tommie has been saying. I have been following him around for years now. What I mean by that is once you've signed up for something Tommie recommends, you become his downline/lead. He doesn't need a lead capture page if he's telling people he's enrolled in something about something else on the Internet that is no to low cost and because of their previous positive experience with programs he's recommended, they like me follow his lead and join.

The thing I have noticed is that after I join some or most of the free/low cost advertising Tommie recommends and immediately place my ads there about something else and around the internet about the new program,  I might login a year and a half later and find that I have made some commissions.

Finally, I am discovering now that traffic links and hot links seem to be pulling nearly as well as solo ads in some venues.

By the way this $3.75 program is pretty good!

Tommie, you have a light that just shines where ever you go. You're unique, and I'm pretty sure that if you had to write a book all about your work online, still no one would be able to imitate you successfully, or even come close. They would learn good and interesting ideas and approaches, but there will only ever be one Captkirk :)

I tend to think that some people enter marketing looking for a plan to follow, and some enter and just make their way as they go, learning and experimenting. I guess it depends on the personality of the marketer.
