I have just figured out; using quotation marks in email subject lines,
and in text emails, that everything from and including the first
quotation mark is automatically deleted.

Site owners would be well advised to remove quotation marks
from all email swipes in the affiliate toolbox, and to warn members
not to use them in subject lines or text mailings.

There does not seem to be an issue in HTML mailers,
in the body of the email.

I do not know if you are aware of this, I have never seen
any warning about this.

I have been wondering why I kept seeing emails that were
obviously missing the ending, then when it happened to me
I figured out why.

If he does not already do it; someone should tell Robert Puddy
to warn all site owners about this. ( I think he sells the scripts)

Have a beautiful day.

Thank you,
Thomas H. Keoppel

Hi Thomas,

I noticed on a couple of sites that the personalisation does not work if you include an exclamation mark directly after the [first_name] or what ever the code is. However, leaving a space after the bracket and then adding the exclamation mark appear to work fine. Strange. Have you noticed this?

Best regards and looking forward to hearing from you soon, John.

Thanks for sharing this, Thomas. So, I have to check my email series in GVO, if they contain "quotation marks" in subject lines. They were automatically uploaded when I linked my GVO account to MyLeadSystemPRO. They have this campaign with pre-written emails, that all you have to do is link up your autoresponder account with the campaign & series provider (in my case, MLSP).

I have never heard anything like that.  I think it's always a good idea to go into your inbox and check the ones you've sent to see how they look.  Can't check each one but at least try checking a few.  Thanks for the tip!

Good info. Thanks.

Speaking of things you can or cannot include in the subject line.  I see warnings about using the word 'free'  because many times your ad will automatically be sent to the spam folder.

I have seen people use these substitutes;  *f*r*e*e*,  free*e,  etc.

Personally I have been using fre e and that seems to be OK, but I cannot guarantee it.

I am interested in other peoples experience with this subject (excuse the pun) :)

In mailers where apostrophes and quotation marks cause problems, I've found that using the backtick ` character instead works perfectly and is virtually indistinguishable from an apostrophe or single quote. On a standard UK keyboard, the backtick is to the left of the 1, above the tab key - users of other keyboards will have to Google for it!

Also saw F.R.E.E.

That means to me "hidden costs you will not account at first sight"...

XD

Not always.  Many times I promote sites that are really free.  Some of these sites have upgrades available, but the upgrades are not mandatory. For instance, here is a free site I use every day, http://instanttrafficgeneration.com/aff/9781  and it works. :)

Your comment about the quotes and other non alpha numeric characters may be due to the script a particular site is using. I've seen it a few times. a script will see a particular character and delete everything after it or some other weird function. Most of the time these problems are corrected with updates, other times not.

Yep, it is true. I found out the hard way the other day. Wish I had had time to come by here and see this BEFORE I screwed up a mailing. There is nothing on the sites to tell you this either. Another bit of knowledge to store in the old head bin for future reference.

Along the same lines, if you accidentally add a space before your URL when copying and pasting - it may cause issues with showing your site too.

Regarding the space in the URL the same thing is true if a space follows the url. Some sites will flag the problem before the url is posted, but be careful with spaces both before and after because the site will not work.

Hmm That's good to know!

There are also some programs that turn an apostrophe into a forward slash mark--and add ANOTHER forward slash every time you save, forward, or otherwise change the email. So your nice, neat, casually written email (the one with the contractions) looks like crud *sigh*
